Our Methodology — How We Evaluate Flores Boat Trip Expeditions

Our Curation Methodology

In a market with hundreds of options, how do we select the handful of vessels and experiences that meet the Flores Boat Trip Expeditions standard? Our reputation rests on the quality of our curation. We are not a marketplace; we are a gallery of the finest, safest, and most exceptional sea voyages in the Flores archipelago. This is achieved through a proprietary, multi-point evaluation methodology that every potential partner must pass. Our process is rigorous, objective, and centered on the five pillars of a true luxury expedition.

Only vessels and partners that achieve a minimum score of 85 out of 100 on our evaluation are accepted into our exclusive expedition portfolio. This ensures that every option we present to you has been thoroughly vetted and meets our promise of excellence. The process is overseen by our expert team, ensuring genuine, hands-on assessment.

The Five Pillars of Evaluation

1. Maritime Safety & Compliance (35% Weighting)

This is our non-negotiable foundation. A vessel can be beautiful, but if it is not safe, it will never be part of our collection.

  • Vessel Certification (10 pts): Current and valid Surat Persetujuan Berlayar (SPB – Port Clearance), Surat Ukur (Tonnage Certificate), and Pas Besar (Vessel Registration) from the Directorate General of Sea Transportation.
  • Onboard Safety Equipment (10 pts): Exceeds minimum requirements. Includes SOLAS-grade life rafts, ample life jackets, EPIRB, satellite phone, marine VHF radio, GPS, radar, and a comprehensive, fully-stocked medical kit with emergency oxygen.
  • Crew Qualifications & Training (10 pts): Captain holds a valid maritime license (minimum ANT III for vessel size). All crew possess valid Buku Pelaut (Seaman’s Book) and Basic Safety Training (BST). Regular drills for man-overboard, fire, and emergency evacuation are documented.
  • Vessel Maintenance (5 pts): Impeccable engine room, detailed maintenance logs, and clear evidence of regular dry-docking and servicing.

2. Service & Hospitality Excellence (25% Weighting)

We apply the standards of a five-star luxury hotel to the sea.

  • Crew Training & Professionalism (10 pts): Crew are trained in luxury hospitality standards, demonstrating proactivity, discretion, and English proficiency. A dedicated, experienced Cruise Director is mandatory.
  • Culinary Program (5 pts): Professional chef, diverse menu catering to international palates and dietary restrictions, high standards of food hygiene, and use of fresh, high-quality ingredients.
  • Onboard Comfort & Amenities (5 pts): Quality of cabins, linens, en-suite facilities, common areas, and overall vessel cleanliness and ambiance.

3. Expedition Quality & Guiding (20% Weighting)

The journey itself must be enriching and expertly led.

  • Guide Expertise (10 pts): Lead guides must be licensed by the HPI (Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia) and possess deep knowledge of local ecology, wildlife, and culture. For diving, PADI Divemaster or Instructor certification is required, with a strong emphasis on safety and marine conservation.
  • Itinerary Design (5 pts): Well-paced, thoughtful itineraries that balance iconic sites with exclusive, off-the-beaten-path experiences. Flexibility to adapt to weather and guest preferences.
  • Equipment Quality (5 pts): High-quality, well-maintained snorkeling and diving gear, comfortable tenders (skiffs), and any other recreational equipment.

4. Sustainability & Local Impact (15% Weighting)

We believe luxury travel must be a force for good.

  • Environmental Management (10 pts): Strict waste management and segregation system, no single-use plastics provided to guests, use of reef-safe sunscreens, and sustainable sourcing for provisions. Evidence of partnership or contribution to a recognized conservation organization (e.g., Komodo Survival Program, Manta Trust).
  • Community Engagement (5 pts): High percentage of crew hired from local Flores communities, fair wage practices, sourcing from local markets in Labuan Bajo, and meaningful, respectful engagement with local villages.

This covers the professionalism and reliability of the operator.
